Tiebreak

also: tie-break · 7-6

The game that decides a set at six games all: first to seven points, two clear.

When a set reaches 6-6, the players play one more game scored in points rather than in the usual 15-30-40: first to seven, winning by two. The set goes down as 7-6, and the tiebreak's points are written in brackets after it, by convention the loser's: 7-6(4) means the tiebreak finished 7-4.

Every set here carries the tiebreak points of both players when it went to one (tiebreak1 and tiebreak2 on each set), so tiebreak records, the share of tiebreaks won and how close they ran are all countable from the data.

Final sets have had different rules over the years and at different events (an advantage set with no tiebreak, a tiebreak at 12-12, a first-to-ten tiebreak at 6-6 since 2022). A tiebreak to ten still appears as a 7-6 set with its points.

The common mistake

A 7-6 set without tiebreak points is not a tiebreak the source forgot: older advantage final sets can end 7-5 or 8-6, and a set ESPN abandoned mid-tiebreak has no points. Count tiebreaks from the points, not from the 7-6.
