Walkover and retirement

also: w/o · ret. · retired

A walkover is a match never started (one player withdrew); a retirement is a match stopped after it began.

Both end with a winner who did not have to finish the match, and they are handled differently. A retirement has a score up to the moment it stopped and counts as a win and a loss in records; a walkover has no tennis in it and counts in no record.

Neither is rated: the result says more about an injury than about the two players' level. outcome on every match says which it was (completed, retired, walkover or default).

The common mistake

Win rates that include retirements flatter players who meet injured opponents. get_player_stats and get_surface_splits return wins by retirement separately so they can be taken out.
